• Making school journeys safer and increasing walking and cycling by implementing School Streets;
• Trialling and testing new transport technologies through our ‘Future Transport Zones’ programme of work.
The Road Safety Team is committed to achieving the City Council's ambitious Vision Zero target—eliminating deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2040. Guided by the Safe Systems Approach, we work across multiple sectors to design and implement measures that improve road safety and support the Healthy Streets Approach, which puts people first and creates streets that promote active travel, clean air, and safer communities.
What will I be doing?
As a new team, it is an exciting time as our programme of activities will continue to develop over time based on our research into how we can deliver these aspirations.
We are seeking dedicated Assistant Road Safety Officers and Engineers to help identify and deliver road safety initiatives and projects within the City Transport service area that drive a reduction in casualties across the City. Depending on your skills and background you could be supporting senior officers on identifying, designing and delivering comprehensive road safety engineering schemes or road safety initiatives and through our educational, training and promotional activities, or any other activities that would deliver a reduction in road traffic casualties.
Your work will focus on ensuring that all projects promote both the Safe Systems Approach to Road Safety as align with the Healthy Streets Approach, which emphasises the creation of safe, accessible, and pleasant environments for all road users.
Key Responsibilities:
• Development of Road Safety Activities:Assist senior officers in the identification and development the City Council’s road safety activities as part of the continual development and improvement of the City Council’s Safe Systems Approach to Road Safety, looking for opportunities to drive progress towards the vision zero target.
• Project Support:Work alongside senior officers to deliver road safety engineering schemes, camera enforcement programmes, the school crossing patrol service and road safety education, training and publicity activities.
• Data Analysis: Analyse and present data related to road collisions and casualties to identify key issues and the opportunities to target road safety activities proactively to reduce both the number and the severity of collisions.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with and respond to inquiries from emergency services, businesses, and residents regarding road safety concerns, ensuring clear communication and effective solutions.
• Cross-Departmental Support: Provide road safety advice to various teams within the transport sector including planning applications and major projects, and the City Council, including schools, while considering the principles of the Healthy Streets Approach.
• Representation and Consultation: Represent the City Council at consultation events concerning road safety issues, advocating for strategies that enhance safety, public health and mobility.
• Road Safety Knowledge Development: Build and maintain a knowledge of road safety activities, interventions, Safe Systems and Healthy Streets approaches through researching changes to legislation and best practice.
• Team Administration: Support senior officers on general team administrative activities, including ordering and distributing equipment to school crossing patrols and cycle trainers, and road safety training and publicity materials as required.
• Workload Management: Manage your allocated workload effectively, maintaining accurate records of progress and ensuring project milestones are tracked and reported accurately.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Welfare policies as outlined by Bristol City Council.
• Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of project delivery, modelling best practices across the service.
• Maintain a high standard of work quality, adhering to current legislation and Council codes of conduct.
• Complete mandatory training as required by the Council, ensuring you remain up-to-date with health, safety, and safeguarding policies.
What You’ll Bring:
• Proactive individuals with a foundation in road safety engineering, data analysis or education, training or publicity principles and a commitment to promoting road safety and healthy streets.
• Familiarity with current road safety legislation and best practices.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to research best practice, analyse data, or design traffic schemes using technology such as AutoCAD.
