Salary: £39,150 - £44,430

Sustainable Transport Planner (Electric Vehicles).

24 Months Fixed-Term/ Secondment Opportunity.

Hackney is one of the most dynamic and progressive local authorities in the UK. We are a resilient, vibrant, and creative borough in the heart of London, with strong, diverse communities and a powerful set of shared values.

Over the past twenty years, the Council has built up first-class services, outstanding public infrastructure, and a reputation for excellence, innovation, and ambition. We are leading the way on essential work such as our fight for equity in Hackney with a particular focus on becoming an actively anti-racist borough. But the work doesn’t stop there, we are proactive in our approach to bringing fairness to all aspects of life including gender, neurodiversity and across the poverty divide.

Our Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all our residents, businesses and visitors. Our Streetscene team is responsible for the design and maintenance of all highway networks, footways, bridges and lighting on all public roads, contributing to the well-being of our community and creating a sustainable public realm. Working within the Public Realm Division, the Sustainable Transport and Engagement team delivers smarter travel and road safety programmes to influence behaviour change towards safer and more sustainable forms of travel.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sustainable Transport Planner to assist in managing and progressing an ambitious project at the forefront of transport planning.

You will help to deliver one of the country’s biggest expansions of electric vehicle (EV) charging points, which will see 3,000 chargers on the borough’s streets by 2030. Providing the right mix of infrastructure will help meet the Council’s ambitious plans to encourage a 90% take up of electric vehicles in Hackney by 2030 supporting our aims to become a net zero carbon borough by 2040.

Working in partnership with an appointed service delivery partner with expertise in this field you will support the planning and delivery of a forward-looking EV charging network in Hackney that will accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles delivering improvements to the air quality in the borough that all residents will benefit from. You will work under direct supervision of a senior transport planner but there will be opportunities to take the lead in some project work.

A relevant degree or equivalent is a minimum requirement. Experience, or further qualifications, in Transport Planning or a relevant skill such as project management would be an advantage. You will receive industry training in Electric Vehicles and recharging technologies.

Using your skills in the collection, assembly and analysis of data, you will provide essential background material to inform important decisions.

The role will also support the delivery of statutory and legal obligations related to transportation in a politically sensitive and customer-focused manner.

The role affords the opportunity to use your initiative and creativity in designing and implementing a public consultation and engagement plan in coordination with the Council’s communications team.

You will need to demonstrate report writing skills, knowledge of transport policy, a capacity for interpreting transport strategies, and excellent verbal communication skills. Analysis skills should ensure at the very least familiarity with things such as the PIVOT and LOOKUP elements of Excel.

Knowledge of GIS will be a considerable benefit. You will also have shown confidence engaging with and managing the expectations of stakeholders including politicians.
