At Devon County Council we work together to make Devon ‘the best place’. We are an ambitious authority and are looking for two enthusiastic and passionate Transportation Planning Graduates that shares that vision and wants to make a difference for everyone within Devon.

We have a strong, experienced and supportive transport planning team at Devon County Council, which you will immediately feel part of. The transport planning team has a key role in developing transport plans to support ambitious housing and jobs plans, whilst also ensuring that we respond positively to Devon County Council’s climate emergency declaration and supporting healthier, more active lifestyles. Understanding how the impact of technology and innovation will change the way people travel is an increasingly important part of our work as is understanding how we can influence peoples’ behaviour to support safer and sustainable travel for their daily needs. In recent years, the team has been hugely successful in submitting bids and securing funding to enable delivery of high quality cycle routes (Tarka Trail), new railway stations (Marsh Barton Station and Okehampton Interchange) and several high-profile highway projects (North Devon Link Road and Dinan Way Extension, Exmouth). We have also recently updated our Local Transport Plan which sets out direction for transport infrastructure in the county for the next 15 years.

You will enjoy seeing projects that you provided detailed numerical and economic analysis input to helping build a Devon where people can get around easily and live healthy and fulfilling lives.

As a Transportation Planning Graduate you will receive training and guidance across different areas of transport planning including representing the County Council during public consultations to drafting Committee reports and undertaking work on extensive modelling projects. We will support you to grow and develop as a Transport Planner, including gaining a Masters Degree in Transport Planning and working towards becoming a Chartered professional. Our career grade scheme, which you’ll be on from when you join, allows you to progress all the way through to a Senior Transport Planner as you gain experience. The initial role is for a 2 year fixed term.
You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the services provided by the team.

We do not expect you to have much experience – we will give you the training you need – but an understanding of some of the challenges in transport planning and road safety would be a real advantage. Numerate, strategic and a real problem solver, you will feel confident analysing and interpreting data and writing reports on your findings. First and foremost, you should have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (i.e. Mathematics, Geography, Engineering or Science).

Interviews will be held on 6 and 7 May 2025 with the role starting on 1 September 2025.

For an informal discussion please contact Hannah Clark or Liz Holloway on 01392383487 / 01392383497 or by email [email protected] / [email protected]
