Road Safety Engineer - Remote Working

36 hours per week

£27,991- £39,246 per annum (dependent on experience)

Based at Quadrant Court, 35 Guildford Road, Woking, GU22 7QQ

This role is open to remote working meaning you aren't required in the office 5 days a week. We’re less about you driving to work and more about us collectively driving down our carbon footprint. We care about how you work rather than where you work; the people rather than the postcode. In support of our people and our greener futures strategies, we’d welcome a conversation with the successful candidate on what remote working may look like for you.

Are you passionate about road safety and looking for an opportunity to build on your road safety engineering career? Do you want to be part of a team which works towards making roads safer for its users?

If yes, then we want to hear from you!

The Road Safety and Active Travel Team within the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure directorate at Surrey County Council is seeking to appoint a Road Safety Engineer (PDP).

About ETI

The Environment, Transport & Infrastructure (ETI) directorate is responsible for a wide range of services including highways, environment, transport, planning, countryside and waste management. These services are critical for people living, working and travelling through Surrey, delivered by the county council or in partnership.

About the Road Safety and Active Travel Team

The aim of the Road Safety and Active Travel Team is to reduce road casualties, anti-social driving and to promote more walking and cycling. These will be achieved through highway safety engineering and infrastructure improvements, working with the police on the enforcement of road traffic law (particularly using safety cameras) and through education, training and promotional campaigns to improve pedestrian and cycling skills and improved road user's behaviour.

About the role

As a Road Safety Engineer, you will assist the team by continuing to reduce road casualties throughout Surrey. This will be achieved by undertaking collision hotspot analysis and investigation, leading to the development and commissioning of highway improvement schemes to reduce road casualties. The role will also include conducting and writing road safety audits of highway improvement schemes and commissioning maintenance of road safety-related highway infrastructure such as vehicle activated signs and school flashing wigwags. The role will require a close working relationship with police and local highways colleagues with whom speed management plans are also developed to identify and tackle the worst speeding problem sites too.

About you!

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with experience as a Technical Officer or Assistant Road Safety Engineer.

To be shortlisted for interview for this position, your application and supporting statement will clearly evidence:

  • Experience of working within the road safety or highway design field
  • An ability to understand highway design drawings and undertake analysis of highway collision data
  • Able to communicate effectively with a range of internal and external teams/bodies and work to tight deadlines
  • A degree/qualification in civil engineering or similar related subject

This position is a professional development programme (PDP) and as such spans over three pay grades (PS7, PS8 and PS9) with salary ranges from £27,991 to £39,246. The 3 relevant job profiles are attached at the bottom of this advert. The successful candidate will be appointed on a grade and salary depending on skills, abilities, qualifications and experience.

In this role you will benefit from training, mentoring and an accelerated pay progression upon meeting the knowledge, responsibility and skills' objectives agreed until the final PS9 grade is achieved.
