What will I be doing?
As a technical expert in traffic engineering and Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), you will guide the city’s efforts in creating safer, more efficient, and sustainable streets. You will provide specialist advice to senior management, Councillors, and key stakeholders, driving initiatives that align with the Council’s transport vision while ensuring compliance with regulatory procedures.
This role places you at the forefront of delivering projects that embody the Healthy Streets Approach, a framework that prioritises streets as safe, vibrant, and accessible spaces for all. By focusing on health, well-being, and inclusivity, you will help design traffic systems that support active travel, reduce congestion, and foster a cleaner urban environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Technical Leadership: Lead the development of traffic engineering projects across the city, providing expert advice on complex schemes. You will supervise staff development and provide technical sign-off for intricate projects, ensuring they adhere to quality assurance standards and legal requirements for Traffic Regulation Orders.
• Project Management: Manage project budgets, oversee resource allocation, and ensure that all projects are delivered within agreed timescales and financial tolerances. You will play a key role in forecasting and managing project resources, ensuring that the right expertise is available at each stage.
• Strategic Advice and Consultation: Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, including Councillors, Cabinet Members, and the Mayor’s Office, offering in-depth technical expertise on traffic engineering and regulation. Your role includes representing the Council at public meetings and consultations, engaging with residents, Councillors, and other stakeholders to address transport challenges and opportunities.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Work collaboratively across departments and external organizations to foster partnerships that drive improvements in service delivery. You will represent the Council at consultations and public meetings, ensuring transparent communication with the community and stakeholders around traffic and transport issues.
• Innovation and Improvement: Continuously seek to improve systems and procedures within the traffic engineering team. You will be responsible for identifying opportunities to streamline processes and enhance the effectiveness of the City Transport service.
• Mentorship and Training: Provide leadership within the team, supporting staff development through training and mentorship. You will be instrumental in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skill development within the department.

Healthy Streets Approach:
In this role, you will champion Bristol’s commitment to the Healthy Streets Approach, ensuring that traffic engineering projects not only meet technical standards but also contribute to creating streets that promote health and well-being. This approach encourages walking, cycling, and public transport, aiming to create cleaner air, less traffic, and more vibrant public spaces that benefit all citizens. You will be a crucial part of transforming Bristol into a city where streets are places for people, not just vehicles.

Additional Responsibilities:
• Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Welfare policies as outlined by Bristol City Council.
• Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of project delivery, modelling best practices across the service.
• Maintain a high standard of work quality, adhering to current legislation and Council codes of conduct.
