Job summary
The Department for Transport are recruiting for two Senior Transport Modellers within the Local Transport Modelling team. Candidates will have proven expertise in using complex models to solve analytical problems and the ability to communicate analysis effectively to inform decision-making. Your skills as a Transport Modeller/Analysts are recognized and acknowledged within the department allowing you to work on a variety of projects within difference policy areas.

Duties and responsibilities

The Local Transport Modelling Team plays a vital role in the development of policy and informing investment decision-making that has a real and tangible impact on users. It forms part of Local Roads and Transport Analysis (LRTA) group which is a high achieving fast-paced multi-disciplinary analytical team that works closely with policy teams and covers high political priority areas including:
•    Tackling congestion and driving economic growth through managing a potential £5.5bn investment in the major road network whilst balancing the need to deliver wider policy objects around carbon and levelling up
•    Tackling the housing crisis and supporting the ambition to build new homes over the decade through improved infrastructure
•    Economic rebalancing, improving intra-regional connectivity and boosting economic growth in the UK’s
Transport modellers in LRTA work in project-based environment, supporting policy teams on a wide range of projects, and delivering high impact advice to support decisions at the highest level. Posts in this team offers the opportunity to use your analysis expertise to help design government policy.

The role of a Senior Modeller/ Analyst will include:

•    Providing analytical advice and modelling review;
•    Working with external stakeholders to develop modelling analysis to support to decision making
•    Advising on specific modelling issues both to DfT customers and the external
•    Commissioning modelling from external consultants, project managing their work and assuring outputs

The role requires the ability to deliver progress on long term model development activities. The post will include managing contracts with external suppliers, giving direction to scheme promoters and ensuring solutions are proportionate and pragmatic, meet requirements and are delivered to timescale. Prior experience in the development or application of transport models is essential and a demonstrable experience of the application, and understanding, of TAG.

Post holders will have understanding of project management techniques. When managing their own time and resources, they should be able to demonstrate flexibility, prioritising workload appropriately in what can sometimes be a rapidly changing policy environment.

Experience

•    Experience in developing and using transport models to solve complex problems.
•    Experience in undertaking analysis on modelling outputs to arrive at conclusions around modelling suitability and performance.
•    Knowledge of appropriate modelling guidance and references.  
•    Experience of communicating complex data and ideas clearly and tactfully to a range of technical and non-technical audiences in an authoritative, informative and engaging manner.
