As a Principal Transport Planner in the Safe and Healthy Streets Team you will be responsible for delivering significant neighbourhood-based, traffic-reduction, transformational Healthy Streets projects, you will lead on the delivery of projects that align with the Camden Transport Strategy.

The role
In this role you will lead on the development and delivery of multiple, significant, area-wide “Healthy Streets” projects within neighbourhoods across Camden.
The Safe & Healthy Streets team at Camden is at the forefront of Healthy Streets based project delivery and in the recent Healthy Streets Scorecard Camden was the third placed borough overall and the top inner London borough based on Housing Density.
You will be responsible for leading a sub-team of two transport planners (one at Senior level, one at Planner level) in a pro-active, innovative, and dynamic way, helping those officers deliver a portfolio of Healthy Streets projects and support their personal development.
You will lead in delivering the roll-out of larger and more complex, area-wide, low-traffic “Safe & Healthy Streets” projects across Camden. This will include project managing area-wide traffic reduction, public realm, and road safety improvement schemes in priority locations across the Borough. For examples of some the types of schemes you could be working in this role please see the following schemes Camden is currently engaging or consulting on:

Dartmouth Park Area Healthy Neighbourhood
Camden High Street Pedestrianisation
Camden Street Area Safe and Healthy Streets   

In developing schemes such as the above, you will be required to consider how neighbourhood-based Healthy Streets projects can support wider improvements to our public realm and the climate emergency, for example through the introduction of urban greening and so on.
The role will be responsible for project management across all aspects of area-wide, traffic-reduction Healthy Streets scheme development and delivery with a non-exhaustive list of key tasks below:
• Project planning,
• Feasibility and optioneering,
• Engagement & consultation,
• Report writing,
• Stakeholder management,
• Monitoring,
• Budgeting and financial controls

You will work with colleagues across the Council – including within planning, place and design, regeneration, sustainability, and inclusive economy – to ensure that neighbourhood-based Healthy Streets projects support and contribute to wider strategic initiatives, such as the renewal of our High Streets and improving air quality.

About you
To be successful in this securing this role you will have strong experience of successful project management and delivery of complex, area-wide traffic-reduction and heathy streets schemes. You will also have a strong understanding and experience of the policy and statutory framework within which Healthy Streets, transport planning and related activities.

You will be a pro-active and forward-thinking experienced project manager, capable of successfully managing initiatives, often over-lapping with one another, both on time and to budget.

You will be able to demonstrate effective partnership working and the ability to develop strong stakeholder relations, including liaising with all relevant external organisations.

To ensure success in this role, you will need to have a strong understanding and appreciate of issues specifically around streetscape design, accessibility, and sustainability.

You will be able to help prepare high quality papers and reports for Council Committees, public meetings, and other bodies such as appeals and public inquiries (may be required to attend such events as and when necessary).

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to effectively help support and oversee the workload of more junior members of a team and/or consultants.
