About the Role
Exciting things are happening here in Hounslow! Our diverse team is finding all sorts of ways to make our borough an even better place to be for our residents and visitors alike. By dealing with a wide range of transport planning issues from major strategic transport projects to road safety education, our Transport Planning & Road Safety team is central to our success.

We are committed to delivering our objectives to make Hounslow a cleaner, greener, safer, healthier, thriving and liveable place for our residents. Ensuring people have high quality options to travel is an essential part of this aim. Whether that is encouraging more people to walk, wheel and cycle more, or working with partners to improve our public transport network you will be at the heart of our aim to improve health, respond to the climate emergency and reduce congestion.

As Assistant Transport Planner you’ll be assisting and managing the development, implementation and evaluation of transport policy including our school streets programme development. This role will also support the updating and implementing our Transport Strategy which is about making our transport network healthy, clean, green, safe and accessible. You will also feed into responsibility for the development of businesses case for transport interventions and support funding bids. You will also lead the borough School Travel Planning programme (Travel for Life).

You’ll have the opportunity to expand your skillset in transport policy, data management and oversight, and engagement with key stakeholders.

About the Team You’ll Be Working In
You will be working as part of the Council’s Transport Planning & Road Safety team, reporting to the Senior Strategic Transport Planner, and will be part of a multi-disciplinary project teams that breaks down departmental barriers to ensure the continual delivery of transport policy and programmes that support achieving the Council’s corporate and transport objectives.

About You

Knowledge and understanding of current best practice in the promotion of sustainable transport – both in terms of transport policy development and behaviour change initiatives.

Ability to manage projects successfully with a good working understanding of practical risk, financial and performance management techniques.

Good written and verbal communications skills; an ability to summarise complex proposals into non-technical language and draft clear, concise and accurate reports and an ability to present information and projects for consideration clearly, concisely and persuasively.

Ability to research and process technical and/or legislative guidance, and use findings to inform recommendations or options for a given project, so that projects meet any relevant standards or requirements.

Good ICT skills, preferably experience of using Microsoft Applications, such as Outlook, Excel and Word and GIS skills are desirable.

We are looking for a candidate with a willingness to learn and develop yourself, which will be supported through both on the job and off the job training.

Qualifications:
• No essential qualifications are required for this role if all essential employee specification provisions are met.
• A degree level Transport Planning qualification or other related degree is desirable but not essential.
